GETTING STARTEDHow do I register? All T-zero Xpandizine subscribers will receive notification when registration for the next F2K session will begin. Sign up for your free T-zero Xpandizine subscription at the "Subscribe to T-zero" link. After I've registered, what happens next?A week after registration closes, you will receive instructions to obtain your password. Generally, this date will coincide with the start date of the course. Instructions will not be sent early. This will also give us enough time to find you a study group and Mentor to take the course with. If you do not receive your instructions on the start date of the session, please contact suz. Save any questions you may have until after you receive your instructions and have read the FAQs and information we've provided. Most of the time, you'll find your answers on the site. In our years of teaching online courses, we've seen the same questions many times, so we've tried to make the answers available online for your convenience and to ease the workload on our volunteer staff. Please get familiar with the site. We won't have anyone available for questions until the next session of F2K: Fiction Writing for the New Millennium begins.
MENTORSWhat is the purpose of a Mentor?A Mentor's role is to help a student find their way around the site, to answer any site- and lesson-related questions and to provide encouragement and direction. They also help promote interaction amongst the group members. Only by registering for, or upgrading to, Version 2 Mentor Support will you receive detailed feedback from your Mentor. Mentors are not instructors; they are students who volunteer their time to help other writers. A Mentor's feedback is no more or no less important than anyone else's is. How do I contact my Mentor? After you've registered your password and the course begins, you may reach your mentor by going to F2K Study Groups. Clicking on your Mentor's name will take you to their office where you can read about your Mentor and access their e-mail address.
STUDY GROUPSDo I have to be in a study group? Can't I just mail my assignments to a Mentor for feedback? You will be assigned to a study group and are strongly encouraged to participate to obtain the most benefit from the class. The mentors do not work one-on-one with students outside of study groups via email.
FEEDBACKHow can anyone expect me to give feedback? I have no idea how to do that?We evaluate other people's writings every time we read something, even famous authors. Our opinion counts. We encourage peer feedback in this course to help us improve our writing. It helps to see how our writing comes across to others. You can find some guidelines to offering feedback at Feedback Guidelines.
PASSWORD HELPI forgot my F2K password. Can you send it to me?You can obtain your registered F2K username and password by going to Password Finder. Scroll to the bottom of the page and fill in the e-mail address under which you registered in the space provided. Your username and password will be e-mailed to you. If you provide an e-mail address different from that with which you registered, we won't be able to find your records. My F2K password won't work. What's wrong?Usernames and passwords are case sensitive. All lower case and upper case letters need to be typed in exactly the way you entered them when you registered. If you originally submitted "JANE" as your password upon registration, it won't work if you try typing in "Jane" to access the site. I know I registered, but now I can't get in. What do I do now?First, check to make sure you are entering your username and password correctly. They are case sensitive. All lower case and upper case letters need to be typed in exactly the way you entered them when you registered. If you originally submitted "JANE" as your password upon registration, it won't work if you try typing in "Jane" to enter the site. If that doesn't work, go to Password Finder. Fill in your e-mail address, and they will be re-sent to you. Then be sure to type them in exactly as they appear.
ASSIGNMENTSWhere do we find the lessons? After the session has started, you may find the F2K lessons at Lessons. When are the lessons available? The assignments will be posted on Wednesdays. How long do we have to work on our assignments? They are due the Wednesday after they are posted. Thus, you have one week in which to complete them. Where do I post my assignments? You are to post your assignments in your assigned study group room. How do I post my assignments? You may create your assignment as a word processing document.
The most common way to post your assignment to a board is using the "Edit" menu
on your screen. Once you've completed and saved your work in your word processing
document, highlight the complete document, and then click "Copy" from your "Edit"
menu. Go to your study group room, and click "Post A New Message". This can also
be found by scrolling to the bottom of the page. Fill in your name, email address,
and the title of what you plan to post. Place your cursor in the upper left-hand
corner of the main message box. On your screen, click "Paste" from your "Edit"
menu. This will paste your work to the message board. Then click "Post Message",
and it will be posted on the board. What does "Preview Message" mean? Before posting to the study group room, click "Preview Message" to see what it will look like once it's posted. If you want to make any changes, click the "back" button on your browser to return to your original entry. Once you do this, you need to make at least one change before posting. Otherwise it won't post your message, claiming it's a duplicate submission. I can't get my message posted on the board. What's wrong?Alternative Copying and Pasting Methods: Keyboard Commands Are Options, Too. Highlight the text to be copied in your word processing document by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the mouse to the end of text. Press the "Control" plus "C" keys on your keyboard at the same time to copy your work. Go to your study group room. Place your cursor in the upper left-hand corner of the message box. Press the "Control" plus "V" keys on your keyboard at the same time to paste your work to the message board. Another alternative for pasting to the message board is right-clicking your mouse. What is the difference between "Post A New Message" and "Post A New Response"?If you want to respond directly to somebody else's message, then you would use "Post A New Response". Feedback should always be posted under "Post A New Response". You will find "Post A New Response" toward the bottom of the page after someone's message. If you want to post a message that isn't related to another person's, then you would use "Post A New Message". You'd use this when posting your own assignment. "Post A New Message" can be found at the top of the board and also by scrolling to the bottom of the page. What is the difference between "Preview Message" and "Post Message" on the discussion boards? After you've typed in your message, you may click "Preview Message" to see how it will appear to all who read it. If there is something you'd like to change before actually posting it, click the "back" button on your browser to return to your original entry and make the necessary changes. Once you do this, you need to make at least one change before posting. Otherwise it won't post your message, claiming it's a duplicate submission. It's strongly recommended that you preview your message first. If you prefer not to do so, simply click "Post Message", and it will appear on the message board as is. What does "Subscribe" mean?A subscription to a room means that all posts from the room in which you have subscribed will automatically be sent to your email address. To do this, click "Subscribe" on the group discussion board. Fill in your email address and check off the space that says "Add Address to List". All future posts will then be sent to you via email. This needs to be done for each room from which you'd like to receive the posts. I keep getting posts in my email from my study group. How do I get them to stop? You've "subscribed" to your study group room. Go to the room and click "Subscribe". Add your email address in the requested space, and click "Delete Address from List". This will stop the posts from automatically going to your email address. What does "Search/Personalize Display" mean? You can personalize how you want the posts to show up on your class discussion board. You have a choice of the order in which they are listed, the length of days, weeks or month in which you want to search for a particular post, as well as those posted by a particular person or title. Click "Search/Personalize Display" and set your preferences. Once you've done this, click "View Message Index", and it will show the screen exactly as you have indicated. I posted something that I now want to remove. How do I do that? The only way you can delete a message is by planning ahead of time. You need to provide a password in the space provided when you post your message, which can be used to delete your message at a later time.
CHATSDo I have to attend the chats?Chats are not a requirement of the course. They offer an opportunity to get together and meet with your fellow classmates, but they aren't mandatory. When are chats scheduled? They meet Wednesday and Sunday evenings at 8:00 p.m. ET. How do I access the chat room? The F2K chat room may be found at F2K Chat Rooms for java-enabled browsers. For non java-enabled browsers, you will need to download an IRC program from the Internet. To access the chat rooms through IRC, use chat.hosting4u.net, port 6667, room #fiction-1, #fiction-2 and #fiction-3
GENERALHow long is the course? The first few days consists of Orientation. This provides an opportunity to get to know the other students in your study group, as well giving you ample time to find your way around the site. You are welcome to begin Lesson 1 once you feel comfortable with finding your way around. There are a total of six lessons with an extra week at the end for posting late assignments or working on a rewrite of an earlier assignment. I've changed my e-mail address. Whom do I let know?Let your Mentor know your new address. If you are also on the T-Zero: The Writer's E-Zine mailing list, you'll need to delete your former e-mail address from that list, then add in your new one to continue receiving T-Zero: The Writer's E-Zine. What is T-Zero: The Writer's E-Zine?T-Zero: The Writer's E-Zine is our monthly online magazine distributed to those who request a free subscription. Is there an age requirement to take F2K?F2K is open to people of all ages. How can I be assured no one else will steal my work?Common sense dictates that we don't borrow anyone else's writing for our own use. Plagiarism will not be condoned in F2K. Why do you offer a free class? What's the catch? This is how we recruit new members for our international writers' group, Writers' Village University. There is no obligation to join, of course, but once you have tried our method of writer education, we hope you will consider becoming part of our community. How do I join WVU?To find more information about all that WVU has to offer, including how to register for membership, go to WVU Membership Information.
